Artist Statement
My work captures a myriad of objects, patterns, and colour, drawing on ideas of the decorative and its associations with the feminine. I create arrangements, assembled from objects which I pull from domestic spaces. These include lamps, vases, wallpaper, textiles and their patterns. I choose the subjects for their connotations tied to femininity, sourcing materials from my home, for personal significance, or from other places where I encounter everyday domestic items.
I construct each painting as a collage, layering fabric and wallpaper with painted objects and stitching to create an uneven surface. The work is repetitive and uses an excessive focus on items often dismissed within fine art, and craft processes tied to the home. By using these materials in a large quantity, the work feels overwhelming to the viewer. This is a quality that is fundamental to the work. My paintings shift these forms out of the home, allowing them to exist beyond the domestic.
